»Riesling«

In our eyes, Riesling is the king of white wines. Here at the Diwald Wine Estate, it is our secret love. Riesling originates from the Upper Rhine and is a natural cross between Weißer Heunisch, Vitis Sylvestris and Gewurztraminer. This grape variety demands a lot of its vineyard site and wine grower, but offers long-lived and expressive wines in return. We think it’s also important to mention that we do not de-acidify any of our Rieslings – they should be allowed to show their true, unaltered personality!

»Riesling Fuchsentanz«

Origin

Why the name “Fuchsentanz” (“Fox Dance”)? It was inspired by the German expression which directly translates to “where Fox and Rabbit say goodnight”, in other words, a remote place out in the sticks. And that is exactly how we would describe our often quite tranquil region. This extremely drinkable Riesling hails from a gravelly site and a loess-rich Southern slope. In October the grape bunches are hand-picked and then pressed whole in order to conserve the lean and delicate character of the wine. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, and the wine is left on the lees until bottling in Spring or early Summer.

Character

Fuchsentanz is a beautiful composition of cool and warm elements: the gravelly soils lend it citrusy notes whereas the loess contributes apricot aromas. Some years, the wine has a touch of residual sugar, but in principle it is a dry Riesling with high acidity, meant for drinking pleasure.

Origin

Goldberg is one of the best single vineyards in the village. Terraces and hills which slope towards the Danube Valley and mighty loess soils build the foundation for the Goldberg wines. The Riesling from this site grows on an often dry and hot Southern slope with plenty of loess and a relatively thin layer of hummus. Much like with the Fuchsentanz, the grape bunches are pressed whole. Then they spontaneously ferment in stainless steel tanks and remain on the lees until Summer.

Character

This wine can be closely compared to an off-dry Spätlese. It has a robust body and its overall style is, quite simply put, warmer. The notes of citrus vibrate in the background while riper, more exotic aromas appear. The acidity, however, always remains wonderfully crisp, which also helps this wine mature beautifully.

»Ried Eisenhut 1ÖTW Riesling «

Origin

Together with Goldberg, Eisenhut is the hottest vineyard site in Grossriedenthal. A 100% Southern slope of burnt loess, where, if you dig far down enough you will even find ironstone, which gives this vineyard its name. Here, the Riesling grapes ripen very late and also contain less sugar than the Goldberg fruit.

Character

In October the grapes are hand-picked and then left to macerate for 4 to 6 hours, stems included. After spontaneous fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks, the wine remains on the lees for a further 12 months. In terms of its flavour profile, Eisenhut offers a rather unusual minerality for loess-grown grapes. The fruit is not nearly as ripe as in Goldberg, and the wine appear more austere and lean. Its tight acidic structure makes the Eisenhut somewhat “meaner” than its Goldberg cousin.
